On the morning of Oct. 2nd, 1925, Tom Mason, the conductor of the Chesapeake & Ohio 231, kissed his wife before leaving for work. Tom returned to kiss his wife a second time,
something he never did.
Tom never returned home.
Underneath the Church Hill neighborhood, there has been a rail tunnel that was built in 1871-1873.
Since the very beginning,
the tunnel has been claiming lives.
In 1925, after being abandoned for a decade,
the tunnel was revived.
Unfortunately, there were more lives to claim, including Tom Mason, Ben Mosby, 2 African American men named Lewis and Smith, and possibly other unknown workers.
Lewis and Smith remain entombed below this
children’s playground to this day.
Above is a kids’ play area that looks like a train,
named the C&O 231.
In 1994, while laying the foundation for the KONOS Medical Sciences Building, workers discovered a well with numerous human bones inside.
Unbeknownst in modern times (well known secretly),
the VCU medical school in the 1800s
needed human bodies for their students.
This happened all over the globe.
But Richmond had one man over all other graverobbers.
The Ghoul of Richmond,
The Night Doctor, the Resurrectionist,
Chris Baker.
He was the most infamous in America and believed to have supernatural powers among the African American society, whose deceased he preyed upon.

No Richmond tour is complete without discussing the Master of the Macabre, Edgar Allan Poe!
We finish our tour outside of the Poe Museum and delve into his life in Richmond, his loves and inspirations.
The city was his favorite place. It’s where he grew up, went to school, swam in the James River as a boy, and fell in love many, many times.
